How we perform our upgrades to DotNetNuke 6
We have over 300 sites currently running DotNetNuke, we do a lot of upgrades to our sites and we have a “system” that we follow. We copy the website and put it on a test server to perform the upgrades, evaluate, upgrade, fix and repeat as necessary until we are 100% sure that the upgrade will go smoothly. The exact steps are listed below;
- Copy the database and website to a test server
- Evaluate all 3rd party modules that may pose a problem in the upgrade, replace if necessary
- Upgrade the test website
- Evaluate and fix all issues with the website design that were affected by the upgrade
- Evaluate and fix all 3rd party modules that have problems
- Put together a plan for the live upgrade based on problems found and fixed
- Test the plan by going back to step 1 again and repeating
- Upgrade the production website
- Follow through with the plans from the test upgrades
